Meetings / PLUG Mug this weekend? Dec 7 or 8
« on: December 03, 2019, 01:02:23 pm »
Ok, is anyone interested in meeting for a coffee this Sat. or Sun afternoon?
We could meet at Chapters on Lansdowne St. or Tim Hortons on Monaghan Rd.  perhaps at 1:30 pm.

If there are not at least 2 people going to show, then the Mug can be considered a no go.

A major security weakness in Google's Android OS.  Bug can allow  fake login screens that can be inserted into legitimate apps to harvest data.

Security / Re: PIA recently acquired by Kape Technologies
« on: December 01, 2019, 11:50:41 pm »
Thanks for posting the news, Mike.  With the buyout of PIA VPN by an apparently well financed parent company, it would appear that PIA will be kicking for a few more years down the road.  I hope they continue to advertise that they do not keep logs, of their customer's activity, using the VPN.

So it will be interesting to see if next season's Border Security tv series, shows the officials still looking through people's cell phone's, to see if visitors to the US are coming to work there, move there, have a baby there without the proper permissions.  There is no suspicion of digital contraband, in these cases.

I have had no problems at all, with PIA VPN. I am only running a Mint Distro and I don't use Windows.

Yes PIA VPN is the one that Jason also uses, I believe.
I have mainly used PIA for streaming video and I don't have problems with the speed.

Meetings / Plug Mug, Wenesday evening Nov. 27
« on: November 24, 2019, 03:42:42 am »
Ok, since Jason said last week that this Wed. would work for him, let's try for a Mug get together at the Tim Hortons on Monaghan road Peterborough. Usually we shoot for 7 pm or later.
If you think you can make it, then post here with the time that you expect to arrive.

If there are not at least 2 people going to show, then the Mug can be considered a no go.

Again, the weather for that evening does not look the best for me to drive in from Lindsay, so I will not be available.  Maybe the next week, we will try for a weekend, daytime PLUG MUG.

This is a short YouTube video about a downloader program (for Linux and Windows) that lets you select the quality(resolution) of the video available.
The program runs great on my Mint Cinnamon distro and the example short sci fi Youtube video, used in the tutorial is very interesting.  Also note the program will take a playlist of videos and download the whole list of videos, with multiple videos from the list, being downloaded at the same time.

Support / Re: Corrupted micro-SD card that can't be read
« on: November 23, 2019, 08:41:57 pm »
I had the same problem with a micro SD card a few weeks ago.  I never was able to find a way to reformat the SD card.

The only thing that would even see the SD card was the Disks program in the MInt Cinnamon distro.  I tried to format the card from the tools in the Disks program, but it refused to format the card. :-(

The sd card was in my cell phone and as far as I know it was working and I never removed the SD card without the phone being powered off.

edit - The 16 GB SD card shows up as being 2 TB, when the card is recognised???

Marketplace / PIA VPN renewal special offer
« on: November 23, 2019, 08:28:42 pm »
So, I knew my annual PIA subscription should have expired but I was still able to get the app to work on my smart TV/Kodi box.
I logged onto my PIA account and it said my account had expired but it was still working on my kodi box.
Today I got an email from PIA for a special offer to renew.
The normal cost was $3.33 USD/ month for an annual subscription and the special 3 day offer was for $2.76 USD for the annual subscription.

So it appears to be wise to let your VPN subscription  expire and wait for a special rate, offer. :-)

Yes, I thought I would try for a Thursday evening for this week, since that seemed to be a good night for attendance, in the past.

Meetings / PLUG Mug? Thursday evening Nov 21

Ok, it has been awhile since there has been a PLUG Mug at the Tim Hortons on Monaghan road Peterborough. Usually we shoot for 7 pm or later.
If you think you can make it, then post here with the time that you expect to arrive.

If there are not at least 2 people going to show, then the Mug can be considered a no go.

Unfortunately, I don't want to drive in from Lindsay, at night during the winter months, so I won't be attending. :-(
