Marketplace / Re: Anyone with DDR3 ram stick for desktop?
« on: January 15, 2018, 05:54:54 pm »
Actually, Bill, I could use those DDR2 RAM sticks, please! Now, what might I have that you could use as a decent trade? I have another printer its previous owner referred to as a fax machine, but I haven't tested it yet - I'm just loading another computer with Win7 so I can do that, and a couple of other maintenance jobs. Perhaps a nice media server?! Giveaway Linux box for someone in your neighbourhood?!

See you next week! <^8#

Did you ever get a replacement printer, Jason? I have one here that purports to take the #61 cartridges, though I've no idea whether it works or how well at all. Still, if you have an already-purchased cartridge, it may give you the perfect opportunity to test it out. The front of the printer paper load tray, though, has been deformed by heat, but it may just be a cosmetic thing... *OR*!! It could be exactly the same printer you were using, and can swap it over! (How's your karma today?! <^8#)

The things folks pass on to me, sometimes...!

Hello, all! <^8# 2018 did not start out well for me at all - health-wise, anyway! I have what the radio guys are now calling, "The 70-day flu"! The good news is, it didn't seem to last any longer than any other for me, fingers crossed, but despite feeling near-human again, my Achilles heel is bronchitis, so no cold-air exposure till I *completely* stop the uncontrollable coughing that came as the parting gift for this viral game show!

So, I won't see you this evening, but I'm looking forward to next week!

Bob. <^8#

Thank you, Jason, for the very able assist. FYI, I've implemented a "no antenna work below 4C" rule so that will help. Oh, and, HELP! We're going to have to sit down and work through that list again... It means coffee & scrumptious donuts at the least!

See you there! <^8# It *is* weird, though; I keep freaking out when I remember that it's Monday and I'm running late, then (LIGHT BULB!) Oh, yeah... Thursday... If nothing else, it'll shake at least SOME of the cobwebs out!

Maybe... <^8#

Absolutely right, Jason! Good catch! Wish I hadn't been so inattentive... We'll see you at tonight's MUG...

Well, I'm not feeling quite up to snuff, but since I think it's the change of weather, I really have no excuse - I'm IN! <^8#

See you there!

General Discussion / Re: Windows Phone is dead
« on: October 23, 2017, 05:48:50 pm »
And I *know* you know what I'm going to say about that next... If Micro$oft hadn't been so damned arrogant when they shoved Win8 and the Metro GUI into each and every user's face & life, and had, instead, touted the evolutionary upgrade/buff'n'polish from Win7 - "and - HEY! Check out the new features we've built into it! We're building the same interface into cellphones & tablets - you could have a completely consistent interface on all of your devices! Try it, and see if you like it!"

History has been written...

Yes, but it's worse than that. We have the same setup - internet, then VoIP depending on it, so when it goes down, it goes down HARD!

And *just* after we'd converted, we had a momentary blackout, *just* long enough to jam up the phone system, and Rachelle FREAKED! "We're going back to Bell!" "Oh, no we're NOT!", and I went out and bought another UPS, specifically to underpin the cable modem, the VoIP modem, and the cordless phone system in the house!

If it goes down again, she just *might* make me go back to Bell...!! So it can NEVER, EVER, GO DOWN AGAIN! (For any reason, any day, any time, under any circumstance!)

Wish me luck... <^8#

I'd heard the same from an entirely different source. We'll definitely have to see it!

I like the direction Jason's headed with this issue. My 11" netbook is AMD CPU- and video-based, and AMD drivers were the only thing that could properly address the video subsystem in the hybrid APU. Worse still, it took a two or three updates before the "this driver does not support the installed hardware"-type message in the lower right corner of the screen finally disappeared.

And the following update broke it again... Go figure. It seems fine now, but I may well have reverted back to a default Nouveau driver or something, since, not being a gamer and wanting every last ounce of processing speed out of the GPU segment of the processor, I'd rather have something stable than something blazingly fast.

And when is it *EVER* OK to have to work this hard for it?

Marketplace / Re: Anyone have a set of surplus stereo computer speakers?
« on: October 23, 2017, 05:20:16 pm »
Glad to hear it, Bill, but I would've liked to get some of the surplus here out the door. Electrolytics, you say?! Maybe you'd better bring them in next time you're by, and I'll show 'em all the great stuff I've learned at the Electronics School of Hard Knocks!

I say that because, last night, I fixed a dual-band HT rubber ducky antenna whose 3pf ceramic cap needed resoldering - and I figured it out and fixed it! I'm a big-time electronics uber-guy now! <^8# You watch - I'll be desoldering and resoldering capacitors on motherboards next - WHETHER THEY NEED IT OR NOT! <^8#

I'm *so* butch! <^8#

Marketplace / Re: Carry Telecom -- too good to be true?

I'd *love* to think that we can all double our speed for almost half the price, but it sounds like every loss-leader I've ever heard of in the past 40 years... You jump over, they double the rates, and go under in the undertow of the mass "abandon ship!"

Who doesn't want twice for half?! <^8# Maybe the first hundred-thousand customers who make the leap get to KEEP their rates for the next 5-10 years... (Suuuurreee!! Sign me up! <^8#) 'Cuz they'll be around for the long haul...?

And then I opened my eyes and realized I would have to throw off the blankets and give up the pillow, and get started on another every-day day... Yep, bona fide cynic - can someone tell me where I pick up my paycheck?! <^8#

Wow... Johnny-come-lately... Let me add my voice and support, and send my condolences as well. I, too, recently had a near-miss - my 'baby' sister spent more than a week in a coma, and it didn't sound like she was coming out of it. This, of course, the sister who wants to be on the kidney transplant list but continue to smoke despite the stipulation.

So I called the oldest of my sisters a week ago, and since Mom was there, asked how my sister was doing, fearing the worst... "Oh, she's back home again, since yesterday. She's fine..."

Thanks for the call, Ma... Welcome to my family! <^8# *So* glad to hear she's on the mend, but I sometimes can't begin to imagine how... ?!?

You are in our thoughts, my friend...
